The Build
STITCH was never supposed to become sensible.
It started as an Electric Blue 2016 F56 Mini Cooper. A small three-cylinder hatch with a 1.5-litre B38, factory-rated at 100 kW, front-wheel drive, and just enough charm to be underestimated.
That was the trap.
On paper, it looked harmless. Small engine. Small body. Short wheelbase. City-sized footprint. The kind of car people think they understand before it even starts. Easy to park. Easy to dismiss. Easy to call cute if they have never watched common sense leave the room with a parts invoice in its hand.
But STITCH was never treated like a normal Mini.
It became the car that turned every fix into an opportunity, every weak point into a reason, and every “while we’re there” into another line item. A car that did not ask to become a project, but made it very difficult to stay standard. The deeper it went, the less it felt like a modified hatch and the more it felt like something being slowly weaponised by bad judgement and good parts.
PROJECT 001 exists because STITCH carries the kind of problem Stöhlen Customs was built to document: a machine too small to scare people on paper, too expensive to explain without sounding unwell, and too stubborn to leave alone.
The factory formula was not thrown away. That would have been too obvious. The point was not to erase the Mini. The point was to make the Mini more itself, but sharper, louder, harder, stranger, and significantly less interested in behaving.
The engine received Supertech forged pistons and piston rings. The blown factory turbo was replaced with a BMW OEM B38 turbo. Cooling was upgraded with a Forge Motorsport performance intercooler. Exhaust flow was opened through Milltek Sport hardware. A Stage 1 Bytronic tune was added, although the car has not been dynoed yet. For now, the numbers remain unverified. The feeling does not.
The chassis followed. Ultra Racing bracing tightened the front end. BC Racing coilovers changed the stance, response, and attitude. Goodridge braided brake lines, AR Racing Formula 5.1 brake fluid, and EBC Yellowstuff performance braking hardware sharpened the stopping side of the equation.
Then came the white OZ Rally Racing wheels.
That changed everything.
The Electric Blue paint stopped feeling playful and started feeling like a warning. The car stopped looking like a modified city hatch and started looking like something that escaped a service park, found a public road, and decided to become everyone else’s inconvenience.
Inside, the cabin became more mechanical. CravenSpeed hardware changed the shift feel. Defi gauges added pressure, temperature, and consequence. The gauge pod made the interior feel more deliberate, more focused, and less like something built only for traffic.
It became a small machine with a bad attitude and receipts.
STITCH is still unfinished.
That matters.
Because this is not a completed showpiece sitting under perfect lighting, pretending the work is over. It is an active project with missing records, undocumented parts, unfinished plans, future fabrication, and the kind of momentum that usually starts with someone saying, “What if we just…”
The current documented build spend already sits at more than R154,000, and even that does not tell the whole story. That number is parts and shipping only. It does not carry the full weight of labour, missing invoices, late-night decisions, or the quiet financial violence of turning a 1.5-litre Mini into something this unreasonable.
That is the personality of the car.
Small enough to be underestimated.
Expensive enough to be irresponsible.
Built carefully enough to be taken seriously.
Unfinished enough to still be dangerous.
STITCH is the first Stöhlen Customs project because it proves the point before the brand has to explain it: some cars do not need to be exotic to become a problem. They just need the wrong owner, the right parts, and absolutely no adult supervision.
